Will This Be Liverpool's Year In The English Premiership?

By Peter Kinnear

It has been close to twenty years since Liverpool was last crowned the champions of English football. The wait has been a long and painful one for both club and supporters who have been brought up on a diet of success. But the club has been constantly at the top of the league this season and that has been encouraging talk of the dawn of a new, and trophy laden, era.

Yet, despite having stayed within the top two places in the league, Liverpool still find themselves under constant criticism. Their form at home has been poor for a top football club. This has prompted their doubters to question Liverpool's ability to overcome their title jinx and win their 19th league title in history.

Admittedly, Liverpool have not done themselves any favor when they struggled to numerous draws at home against inferior opponents. Past and present champions have always built the foundation of their success on being dominant at home. Yet Liverpool has not been close to doing that, and have actually shown better form away from home where the glare of the spotlight has been lesser.

However, despite the patchy home form, the Anfield football club continues to lead the title race, showing resilience and strength of character. That would be a crucial advantage for the team if they hope to become champions when the season concludes. This characteristic continues to grow despite some setbacks, and both fans and players are beginning to believe.

That would come as a comforting validation for Rafael Benitez. The Liverpool manager has stamped his own style and flavor on the club after moving from Valencia. With the old Liverpool bootroom dangerously close to becoming obsolete, Benitez brought in his continental know-how and transformed the club. Liverpool is now more in tune with modern times and that has become evident both within the club and on the pitch. With all this coming together, winning the title would be the final validation the Spaniard needs for his methods.

Liverpool have also made huge investments in their squad of players. They have spent large sums of money on top players from around the world, such as the Spanish international striker Fernando Torres, and Irish international Robbie Keane. These players have provided added dimension to the squad and could be the missing pieces in the title jigsaw.

The final piece in the title jigsaw would be none other than Steven Gerrard, captain and symbol of the modern Liverpool Football Club. The all-action midfielder brings his passion and skill to a team that also benefits from his winning attitude to the game. This has finally rubbed off on the other players, as they never give up till the final whistle. There have been many results this season which has reflected this improvement in mental strength.

While they appear rocky at times, the most important ingredient for title success is present in the team. The players have a growing self belief that they can finally help the club break its jinx, with performances on the pitch to support their claims. Liverpool continue to improve every season, and if injuries and loss of form can be kept to a minimum, there is no reason why they cannot finally end years of pain with a sweet triumph in 2009. - 16928
