Parenting Lessons: Kids And Cash

By Alix Montoya

It's never too early to learn a few lessons in life and one of the most important things that we can teach our children is the value of money. Of course, I'm not talking about maniacally worshipping it, I'm talking about learning how to handle it with the responsibility of an adult. We know that there are a lot of temptations out there brought about by commercialism targeted on kids, but we can actually protect them from it.

It's important to keep everything organized especially in times like this. There's no way of being sure what the future might bring. Something as serious as an accident, or perhaps a large purchase may set you and your family back if you are not careful in spending. So keeping a budget is important so we don't lose track of our expenses.

Saving up money also lets them buy bigger things. Show your kids that if they save up their allowance, just even once a week, they would be able to buy things like the newest videogame or even something that they have been wanting to have for the longest time. This way they'll get to see the buying power money has and you can teach them how to shop like a smart consumer.

You have to teach your kids this advantage. If they get the opportunity to learn that their most awaited visit to Disney Land hinges on something that they can help do, like keeping a budget, they'll be more than glad to help you with this task. You can also point out that keeping one for themselves can also help them save up for something they might want to buy in the future.

If your kids are a little older, you can try and get them to work simple jobs that would definitely show them how money is earned and why it should be handled responsibly. You can also let them join Minnesota craft fairs and sell the products of their hobbies with you to earn a little bit more extra cash.

It's always best to know that we are ready for whatever life has in store for us and teaching our kids how to responsibly handle money is probably one of the best things that we can do to help them for whatever the future might bring. - 16928
