How You Can Stop Global Warming

By Betha Mmari

If you own a television, surf the internet, or have a radio, it is very unlikely that you haven't heard of global warming. There's been an expansion of press surrounding the issue of late. There is a great deal of debate that surrounds the subject and you may be right to be concerned. The potential exists that, if the predictions come true, Earth will be a frightening and unsafe place for our family members of the future.

You can still help your planet in the fight against global warming in simple ways that are not expensive. In recent years, too much of the main focus of the efforts has been on energy efficient vehicles and appliances. Not having the financial means to make these investments is fine, there are cheaper and simpler ways to join the efforts to help our planet.

Small steps around the home can help fight against global warming. Make sure to turn off your electrical appliances - such as your television or computer - when you aren't using them. Using this method to combat future issues will likely also save you money in the here and now.

Lowering the amount of electrical output is simple, as it involves just shutting off lights or any other electrical appliance in the home that you are not using. What is nice about this approach is that it is completely free and you can save yourself money! A good deal of energy is consumed through the heating of the home, so you can help out immensely just by turning your thermostat down a few degrees. Just a few degrees can make all the difference.

Another simple step is to exchange the traditional light bulbs in your home for energy efficient ones. You can save yourself a little bit of money each year by switching all or at least most of the lights in your home to energy efficient light bulbs. Many traditional light bulbs have to be replaced frequently, but energy efficient ones last for at least a year or two without needing to be replaced. If you are careful where you shop, you can find multi-packs of energy efficient bulbs for five dollars or less.

Renters, in addition to people who own their home, can help out against global warming. It is simple enough to speak up to your landlord about a window that needs repaired whenever it is allowing cold air to seep into your home. Your landlord can further save money through changes in the hot water heater or the addition of an insulation blanket.

You can easily accomplish the ability to be environmentally friendly with your transportation without making a major investment in an energy efficient vehicle. For many, we drive because we want to but don't actually need to. If you are able to walk, carpool or take public transportation, you are encouraged to do so. By not driving three times a week, you can have a tremendous impact in fighting global warming. - 16928
