TNA Wrestling - Part 1

By Brett Fitzpatrick

Coming from small yet humble roots to pay-per-views and sold out arenas, Total Nonstop Action Wrestling is the only real genuine competition that the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) faces.

Founded in early May of 2002 by former WCW and WWE wrestler Jeff Jarrett and his father Jerry Jarrett, TNA started out as a member of the NWA (National Wrestling Alliance) before it felt that its own fan base and identity were strong enough to be its own brand and split in 2004. Though operating out of Nashville, Tennessee, TNA primarily focuses its promotional and live events at the TNA Impact set at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida.

In 2004, TNA began broadcasting "TNA Impact!" as a weekly show along the lines of WWE's RAW and Smackdown. Despite rating difficulties early on, which eventually led to the Fox Sports Net, the original broadcaster to drop the show. It has now found a home at WWE's former base, Spike TV. TNA also broadcasts overseas into countries such as the UK and Australia.

In conjunction with their weekly shows, TNA also has monthly pay-per-views that peak with Bound for Glory (TNA's version of Wrestlemania). These monthly pay-per-views have allowed TNA to take their brand out of Florida and travel across to both America and the world, with successful tours of both Asia and the UK in 2007 and 2008 respectively.

TNA has established an identity quite different from that of WWE. The first marked difference and something that shapes everything in the company, from the narrative flow through to the actual structure of the presentation, is the six-sided ring. Usual wrestling events feature a standard boxing-sized four sided ring, but TNA uses a hexagonal ring which gives the wrestling a completely different complexity from WWE.

The six-sided ring is complimented by a six-sides of steel match which duplicates the standard steel cage match seen in other promotions, except with the added addition of two more steel sides. TNA also has a history of pushing sports entertainment to the extreme, especially in their Cruiserweight league, the X Division. - 16928
