How To Choose A Fly Fishing Net

By Dave Fischer

Most of the time when you're fly fishing you'll land your fish with your rod and reel. But sometimes you may want to use a fly fishing net if you're using a light leader and tiny fly.

If you're going to look for a fly fishing net, here are some tips for you.

Fly Fishing Net Handle

The handle needs to be the appropriate length for easy handling. A short handle will be easy to move around yet small enough to travel easily. Some anglers prefer a fly fishing net with a handle that telescopes in on itself. The telescoping handle is actually the best of all worlds as you can use it for wading or from a boat.

If you choice of fly fishing is from your boat, then you'll want a fly fishing net with a longer handle. This helps you reach the fish without falling in the water.

What You Need To Know About Fly Fishing Net Frames

Now remember you fly fishing net is going to hang from your vest, so you want a lightweight frame. At least I prefer a lightweight one of either aluminum or fiberglass. But there are some traditionalists who prefer wood. If you''re opting for a wood frame choose high quality. It makes a long difference in the long run .

How To choose the Material of Your Fly Fishing Bag

Now fly fishing bags can be made of any number of kinds of materials. Either cotton or nylon have the advantage of not harming the mucous layer of the fish. Cotton won't last as long as nylon. If you don't mind the weight rubber will also work well.

Carrying Your Fly Fishing Net

Carrying your fly fishing net is another consideration as you want to keep your hands free when possible. That's why magnetic clips are helpful. They're easy release without fumbling or reaching when you're ready to lift the fish up. You also want to look at spring loaded cables or Velcro attachments. Before you choose your fly fishing net, think how you fish most often from a boat or wading. If you do both, then consider a telescoping handle. - 16928
