You have made the decision to home school, now you have to select the curriculum! This is no easy job and can be daunting, so break it down into more manageable pieces and take your time.
Knowing your kids style of learning will be key. In fact, in this process of choosing a curriculum, this is where I would start. By learning style I mean, does your child learn by seeing, are they a hands on learner or does a combination of the two suite them? By understanding their style you are able to narrow down which curriculums you should start with.
Cost plays an important role for many of us. Curriculum prices can vary, so it is important that you establish a budget prior to starting your search. Each program will have a different offer, with some of them seeming to have far more substance than others. In some cases it seems like the packaging is just fancy. More often than not, the company is happy to send you a sample of their curriculum, which will help you tremendously by getting the feel for their product.
Believe it or not, it is important to understand your personality when selecting a curriculum. If you tend to be a more laid back, relaxed person, a rigid, regimented program might not be suitable for you. Being realistic about what works for your and your family and what does not is important.
With the high number of homeschooling groups and association in your area you should have access to other homeschoolers. Talk to the other parents, and find out what curriculums they use. Discuss what they like and do not like about past and current programs. Ask them if they use one entire curriculum or do they piece together several?
Select the curriculum that will work for not only your personality, but will work for your budget and your child's learning style too. - 16928
