An Affordable Compact Desktop - The Shuttle KPC K-4500

By Matt Ryan

The Shuttle KPC K-4500 is not only compact in size, but is price tag is fairly compact as well. Due to the flexibility of the operating system - Foresight Linux - this PC is flexible enough to be used as a Media Center or as an everyday desktop for kids, students, or even work. This is one of the smallest, decently priced PC's on the market, with only a few quirks that user's should be aware of; this just might be the PC to fit your needs.

This compact design only measures in at 7.5 (height) x 6.7 (wide) x 11 (depth) inches ? which makes it the perfect size to conceal by a television or on a desk. Surprisingly, the interior leaves plenty of room to upgrade the system and add cards into the free PCI, ATA-100, and SATA-300 slots. The KPC K-4500 also comes with 4 USB 2.0 ports, a parallel port, along with a serial port - all available on the backside of the unit.

With a 1.8GHz Intel Celeron D 439 processor, 512MB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM of memory, 224MB (shared) shared Intel GMA 950 graphics card, and 80GB (7,200rpm) hard drive, this unit offers stable performance for effective productivity. Many users may choose to turn this unit into a fully functional media center, which is definitely possible with the installation of proper codec files (it is not ready out-of-the-box for this functionality).

The KPC K-4500 can be purchased with or without the operating system already installed, ranging from $199 (no operating system) to $230 (with Foresight Linux). Units with Foresight installed will also have a small variety of applications ready to use, Open Office suite, Firefox, Pidgin, Banshee music player, Totem movie player, F-Spot photo organizer, and Compiz.

There are a few quirks with the Shuffle KPC K-4500. There are no optical drives, no digital video or audio outputs, and a keyboard and mouse are not shipped with the unit. The keyboard and mouse are easily fixed as you can just go pick one up or order one. The optical drives might be another story. If you're familiar with, and have no problem using external drives, then this quirk won't affect you. If you're planning on trying to install an optical drive, this is not possible, as the drive bays are not accessible from outside the unit.

Users should also be aware that there are no digital or video outputs on this machine, the unit does not come with a mouse and keyboard, and there are no optical drives. External drives will need to be used as there is no way to install an optical drive on the Shuttle KPC K-4500.

Surprisingly this compact unit, with a price tag just as small, offers a good platform for any use. Those who are comfortable with Linux, and computers, will have no problems maneuvering this PC and getting it to do what you need.

As for the rest of the world, those who are a bit less comfortable with computers, this unit is a good option if you have access to an individual whom is willing to give you free tech support. Or if you're willing to use the unit as is. If this is the case, this is a great bargain and shouldn't be passed up. - 16928
